The tremendous increase in the technology of Social Media is quite amazing. From 130cr population of India or even more where 70%-80% of person is mobile and internet users either it may be Android or IOS or Windows.

As this technology gets updated the people who play the role of scammers, hackers, or anything named also get updated with new crimes techniques. In the past 8–10 years this social media crime has been increased so much and with so many techniques that people couldn’t imagine. Some of the social media crimes which happen daily in India are:

- Defamation

- Cyber Bullying

- Cyber Stalking

- Cyber Trolling

- Cyber Drama

- Scams on Social Media

- Misinformation/ Fake Information

- Impersonation

- Inappropriate/Bad Texting

- Revenge Porn

- Black Mailing

- Account Takeover

Defamation: It’s a false and unprivileged statement of fact that is harmful to someone’s reputation, and published “with fault,” meaning as a result of negligence or malice. State laws often define defamation in specific ways. Libel is written defamation; slander is spoken defamation.

Cyber Bullying: It happens especially with teenagers who try to be login on to the internet for hours and make friends but they abuse or harass them in such a way where they are forced to commit crimes or any serious issues.

Cyber Stalking: Cyber stalking is a more specific form of cyber bullying, and like cyber bullying, is much enabled by the anonymity possible via the Internet. It is the use of the Internet and other technology to harass someone, although some cyber stalking can be secret for a time. While a “traditional” stalker may shadow a victim’s movements, spying on them from hidden areas, or with binoculars or telescopes, the cyber stalker keeps an eye on their target(s) electronically.

Cyber Trolling: Internet trolling is a behavior wherein the troll intends to inflame, upset, or otherwise damage civil discourse. In the context of this series of articles, it tends toward disrupting the online or public communication of others through the use of vile invective, insults, and other verbal havoc. It is often misogynistic. The ability to be anonymous on the Internet removes much of the inhibition a person might otherwise feel to behave so uncivilly.

Scams or Fake Information: A scam aims to trick people into parting with money or revealing sensitive personal data — such as email addresses, passwords, and birth dates — to facilitate ID theft (known as ‘phishing’), which can then be used for financial gain. Whereas scammers create fake information about the handler of that ID which are they using and reveal some inappropriate posts with malicious content about religion, misleading persons from friends, sex, or others.

Impersonation: Impersonation is when someone pretends to be another person like If you pretend to be your twin brother all day at school, that’s impersonation.

Inappropriate/Bad Texting: This crime is mostly done on women where they are bullied, harass or try to be the close ones and then try sexting on them without their concern. Sexting without concern for others is involved in this crime.

Revenge Porn: Revenge porn is the distribution of sexually explicit images or videos of individuals without their consent. The sexually explicit images or video may be made by a partner in an intimate relationship with the knowledge and consent of the subject at the time, or it may be made without their knowledge.

Black Mailing: The terminology itself says about the crime. Blackmail is an act of coercion using the threat of revealing or publicizing either substantially true or false information about a person or people unless certain demands are met.

Account Takeover: This means that your social media accounts are hacked by attackers for using them inappropriately, misleading someone’s identity in bad form, sharing content that is malicious or involved in sexual activities, or even about the religious community.

There are some famous attacks or crimes on social media platforms like:

In India, many such cases happen where these crimes have lead deaths of victims too. You can read the articles about consumer frauds in India from 2016 till now and how the number has increased in huge amounts.
