One of the most dangerous, notorious, or risky crimes which take place where the bankrupt, credentials (it may be banking, personal, etc) happens via EMAIL services. Not only business leaders or entrepreneurs but also power plants, schools, colleges everything gets compromised.

What is Email? It’s the source of our Digital Identity. Many platforms provide free mail services like GMAIL, Yahoo, Hotmail, Orkut (the old one), etc. These email services have made our life much easier to handle all our operations remotely as per comfort. Then it only became the most sensitive thing of crime. Let’s have a look at some of those crimes via email:

  • Threatening
  • Defaming
  • Ransomware
  • Tracing & Tracking
  • Phishing Scams
  • Man-IN-the-Middle Attack
  • Payloads via mail

Threatening: It speaks about someone who might try to threaten you recently by asking for some money or personal stuff. A malicious email is sent to you which looks so scary and threatens you with some of your revenge.

Defaming: If a person publishes any kind of defamatory statement against any other person on a website or sends E-mails containing defamatory material to that person to whom the statement has been made would tantamount to Cyber defamation.

Ransomware: Ransomware is malware that typically enables cyber extortion for financial gain. Criminals can hide links to Ransomware in seemingly normal emails or web pages. Once activated, Ransomware prevents users from interacting with their files, applications, or systems until a ransom is paid, typically in the form of an anonymous currency such as Bitcoin.

Tracing & Tracking: An email consists of much information which can be useful for tracking & tracing the system from where the email was sent. There’s a thin line between track and trace or tracking and tracing, which concerns a process of determining the current and past locations (and other information) of a unique item or property.

Phishing Scams: The notorious email crime which is most dangerous and one must be aware of it. One must be a victim of this scam where a replica of original identity is produced in front of us and befriend them to use it. These trust issues or say “Human Error” will lead to phishing crime and suffer a lot.

Man-In-the-Middle Attack: This is quite precise where a man interferes in between a conversation anonymously and tries to compromise the information which is so illegal.

Payloads via Email: Now this crime rate has decreased somewhere but in India, it’s still active and growing. The payload in the sense a virus or say a file that contains malicious code which gets injected into our systems and infects the whole device.

Apart from this, a notorious scam is also happening which is “Spoofing”.

- Email Spoofing

- Phone Spoofing

- SMS Spoofing

  • Email Spoofing: Email spoofing is a technique used in spam and phishing attacks to trick users into thinking a message came from a person or entity they either know or can trust. In spoofing attacks, the sender forges email headers so that client software displays the fraudulent sender address, which most users take at face value.
  • Phone Spoofing: Caller ID spoofing is the process of changing the Caller ID to any number other than the actual calling number. Caller ID spoofing happens when a caller knowingly falsifies the info transmitted to disguise the number they’re calling from.
  • SMS Spoofing: Text message spoofing or SMS spoofing is sending a text message with someone else’s phone number or sender ID. If you’ve ever sent a text message from your laptop, you’ve spoofed your phone number to send the text, because the text did not originate from your phone.

This was about the crimes via emails which are happening in India every day and still, it increases.
